Four AND Five Months...

Oops--where did the time go? I'm so excited that my photography business is doing so well--but it leaves me with little time to take ALEX pictures! He is five-and-a-half months old now and getting so big. He is learning how to sit on his own and "talks" all the time--no words yet, but we're waiting--and he has figured out how to throw things on the ground. Yea! His funniest talent is growling--actually growling when he's frustrated or getting mad. It's hilarious! He keeps us laughing all the time with his growing personality. Alex is eating "real" food now--well, the jar variety, anyway. He loves squash and sweet potatoes, but is not too fond of peas (check out the video "Peas--Yuck!"). He and Oscar are learning how to be friends--thank goodness Oscar is a patient dog!
Anyway--that's where we're at now. More next month! :)
Happy Thanksgiving!

Three Months

Hi! Hope everyone is doing well. We are doing great--Kevin is settled back in to teaching and I am really enjoying staying at home with Alex. He is getting such a personality and is so fun to play with and just watch him discover his world. He's getting so big now--no one believes that he's only 3 months old when they see him. He has learned to hold his head up when he's on his tummy now (which makes nap time a new challenge) and sometimes acts like he's ready to get down and run around. The next couple of months are going to bring lots of changes as he starts working on sitting, rolling, and teeth!

Visit www.shivers.photosite.com for Alex's three month pictures.

Also, I've uploaded a few short video clips for your viewing enjoyment...or if you can't get to sleep one night...

Month 2

Alex is two months old now! The time has really flown by--I think it helps that he is such a great baby. Not to brag (okay, to brag just a little), but he hardly ever fusses, eats like a champ, and often sleeps through the whole night. Such a good boy! He's very "smiley" now and is trying hard to laugh--especially when Kevin really gets him going. He and Oscar have gotten used to each other--Oscar just kind of ignores him except for the occasional lick or two. Now that Kevin's back at school, I'm at home with him during the day and we've kind of gotten our routine down. Basically, I'm at his beck and call and that's our routine! :) He still sleeps for the majority of the day so that lets me get a few things done--and he LOVES being in his car seat, so he's turing out to be a great shopping partner too (Kevin is SO relieved to give up that duty!).

He had his 2-month check up this week and is doing fine--we almost fainted when the nurse told us his weight: 13 pounds!! (Well, 12 pounds and 15 ounces to be exact...) And he's 24 inches long, too. A BIG boy! He's in the 75th percentile for weight, so the doctor's not concerned--says he's just going to be a big baby. Guess so! Everything else checks out fine as well--he got his first round of immunizations (boo) but did great. I think I was more upset than he was!

I suppose that's it for now. I won't list out all of his 'accomplishments' because at this stage, they're pretty much only exciting to us, haha. Of course, more pictures are posted at www.shivers.photosite.com, under Alexander James, Month 2.

Hope everyone is doing well--more next month!

Month 1

Can't believe it's already been a month since Alex was born!

It's been a time of adjustment for all three of us, but it has been a time of wonder and amazement as well---as in, "I wonder what we got ourselves into and I'm amazed to get three hours of sleep at a time...." Just Kidding!! We have really enjoyed our first month of parenthood and Alex has been a really great baby. He's only fussy when he's hungry, tired, bored or wet....and for the other ten minutes of the day he's very happy! Haha!

Thanks to everyone who's visited, called or sent emails--we appreciate your support and comments on how adorable our son is. :)

And to gather more compliments, I've updated www.shivers.photosite.com with pictures from Alex's first month. Go to "Alexander James" and click on "Month 1".

Happy July!

He's Here!

Well, if you haven't heard--or you can't guess from the title--Alex has arrived! He was born on June 7th at 10:29am.

I started having contractions Monday night around 8pm and they progressed through the night. On Tuesday morning, Kevin left for work and a little later I decided to call and check in with the doctor, since the contractions seemed to be coming about 5 minutes apart. The nurse said that she could "hear it in my voice" and suggested that we come on in. Of course I had to clean up the kitchen, make up the bed and take a shower first, but then I called Kevin and he raced home and we left for the doctor's.

Once there, I was hooked up to monitors that showed they were actually 3 minutes apart (and beginning to really hurt!) but I was not progressing enough in other areas, so after two hours we were sent home to wait a bit longer. We went to my parent's house and tried to eat and rest and finally left for the hospital at around 7pm. I was checked there and still had not made significant progress and we were told to do some "fast-paced" laps around the hallways--REAL fun to do, especially since I was stopping every few minutes for a contraction.

Anyway, fast forward about an hour and a half and on a memorable lap around my water broke (VERY hilarious!!)--so I earned my ticket to stay at the hospital. This was about 11pm on Tuesday night. Jump ahead about 10 more hours of very painful labor--the epidural apparently wasn't as 'miraculous' as they claim--and I was finally ready to push. I pushed for about an hour and a half--Ouch, ouch, and more ouch--and I was completely spent. The decision was made to use forceps (mom says I was asking for the Jaws of Life at this time) and after a whirlwind of preparation and the worst ten minutes of my life, Alex finally was born!!

We both had fevers during the labor and there was some concern about his breathing, so he was rushed off to be put on monitors and such, but was really doing great. I had to have I.V. antibiotics for the next 24 hours but did fine as well. We had to stay at Piedmont for two days because of the fevers and because Alex has a touch of jaundice, but finally were able to be discharged on Friday around noon.

So far, he has been a very calm and quiet baby. He sleeps a TON and likes to eat and has enjoyed napping on daddy during the World Cup games. (Kevin was excited to have TWO great things happen this week--Alex AND the World Cup!) We think we'll keep him--though we have NO idea who he looks like. We've joked about changing his name to Saul because he looks very much like an old Jewish man. :)

I'm working on posting some pictures from the last few days at http://www.shivers.photosite.com/ under "Alex". They should be up soon.

Anyway, that's our story! Thanks so much for all of your calls and support. We've enjoyed being able to share this pregnancy with you and will continue to update with pictures and such as Alex grows and changes--don't worry, it won't be every day!! :)

Love,
Kevin, Natalie & Alex

Still Waiting!

Well, since my phone has been ringing like crazy today, I guess a FEW of you have your calendars marked...haha! Yes, tomorrow is the official due date---but I'm thinking that Alex is NOT going to be as type-A as his mother. We went to the doctor yesterday and there's been no real change over the past week. Physically I'm ready to go, we're just waiting on those contractions (remind me I said that!). We have an appointment set for next Thursday in case he hasn't made an appearance yet (GROAN!) and they'll set up an inducement at that time.

But I really can't complain--knock on wood, but this pregnancy has been really ideal and easy, and I feel fine. I am definitely ready for the next step though! I've held him for 40 weeks now--it's someone else's turn! :) Plus, I've completely "nested" the entire house--we don't even have a junk drawer left and the tupperware is practically arranged in size order. The front porch has been repainted, our bags have been packed for a week, and the carpet has all been steam-cleaned...I'm running out of things to do!!

Well, here are a few more pictures--the finished nursery (ta-da!) and a current picture of what 40 weeks looks like. Keep your fingers crossed for us--we'll let you know as soon as he gets here!

PS--We have a new house phone number: 770-305-9598.

Nursery Pictures

Well, the nursery is almost ready for Alex! Here are a few pictures of the BEAUTIFUL furniture that Kevin's dad built (the armoire and changing table). We still have a few finishing touches to make to the room--but it certainly looks more like a nursery than our guest room now!

We're down to weekly visits to the doc now. We went Monday and everything's good and on track. Only 3 weeks to go, though it's beginning to feel like it's never going to get here!!

Maternity Pictures

To see some of my maternity pics (for those of you not faint at heart...) go to www.shivers.photosite.com, click on "Maternity" and the password is "natalie". Beware--there is lots of belly nudity. :)
Thanks to Jen and Morgan who helped me be the model instead of the photographer...even though I hated every minute!

PS--Last doctor's visit was fine--only 3 more to go! I've gained another five pounds, so that puts me up to 1,376 total. Haha!

33 weeks

This picture was taken on Easter - 33 weeks and counting! We're all doing fine--ready to start our 'how to be parents' classes and finish decorating the nursery. By the way, we've cancelled the Christening (previously Labor Day weekend) and moved the date up to July 1st. We'd love to have you be able to come meet Alex and celebrate his arrival with us.

9 Weeks to Go!

Can't believe we only have nine more weeks! I'm feeling pretty good--just kind of ready to get this show on the road. :) We go to the doctor on Monday for another check-up and to see how many more pounds I've gained. I feel so incredibly huge--I can only imagine what the next several weeks will bring.
